A courier service delivers messages, packages, and mail. Couriers are distinguished from ordinary mail services by features such as speed, security, tracking, signature, specialization and individualization of express services, and swift delivery times, which are optional for most everyday mail services.
As a premium service, courier services are usually more expensive than standard mail services but critical to a company that has a need for an urgent delivery, and their use is typically restricted to packages where one or more of these features are considered important enough to warrant the cost.
With an abundance of varying services from rush local delivery to fleet replacement to On-Board Courier shipments, courier services operate on all scales, from within specific towns or cities, to regional, national and global services.

On-Board Courier — This is when a courier will pick a client’s shipment at their location and immediately bring it to the nearest airport. From there, the courier boards a commercial aircraft with the shipment to ensure total control during transport. Upon landing at the destination airport, the courier will immediately deliver the shipment to the consignee.
Same-day delivery is crucial for time-sensitive materials, such as important electronic parts or medical samples. Due to the critical need, fragility, confidentiality or bulky size of items, these packages cannot be slotted into the existing FedEx or Postal Service delivery times for next day or two day delivery; they must be delivered according to the customer’s schedule and specifications. Organs must be delivered in a certain timetable in order to be viable for transplantation, medical specimens delivered for testing can be the most useful to the patient if results are available quickly, and legal documents are often prepared and delivered to the client or judge on unforgiving deadlines.
